Chuck changing / replacement of newer Bosch PBD 40 spindle lock design
Yep, 16mm is fine as you match the thread of the new chuck (thread/size: UNF 1/2 X20) you'll be fine. I've just replaced mine today with a 16mm Baer ECO05161-2 chuck. That said, I would for sure only recommend drilling into wood etc with the larger shank drill bits - stick to 6-8mm for stainless, 10-13mm for less dense metals and up to 40mm for forstner bits (although I did go carefully with a 50mm which went fine). As another commenter said, the new PBD 40 model has a slightly new design to the spindle and chuck release. Requiring a 16mm spanner fixed firm against the left side (when looking from front) of the tools tube upright, and 19mm spanner to be turned clockwise towards the stationary 16mm. Basically the same direction as Adapting Camera's video on youtube - 'Chuck changing on the Bosch PBD 40'. BUT, if yours is as tight as mine was, a standard 19mm spanner might slip and begin to round off the flat above the chuck. It actually measures a bit below 19mm, so just be careful. Luckily I had an old 17mm spanner and electric grind stone with fairly thin stone, so was able to get in the spanner mouth, grind it a wee bit wider until it fitted perfectly. Also ground the round end off to allow an extension tube over the spanner for extra required torque. The 13mm Rohm Supra chuck (871050) that I've seen eveyone used costs around £115 and has a concentricity of 0.2mm (i think). The Baer ECO05161-2 chuck, including shipping from Germany and after exchange rates + small discount, worked out at £44. They also do a 13mm for less money. These chucks are also available on Amazon/Amazon DE. The concentricity of the 16mm is 0.15mm - so better spec'd than the Rohm and far cheaper. Really impressed by it, solid bit of kit. Before the change I measured the original PBD 40 chuck as having concentricity of about 0.48mm. After the change to Baer I got measurements of just 0.12mm. Happy days.NOTE: with the larger Baer chuck the laser crosshairs only meet until about 85mm in height above the piece, lower than this and the lines separate. Not a big deal though, just line it up 1st before lowering with the wheel. I also added a cheap £6 or so steering wheel turning knob from ebay. Everything is now oiled, running smooth and laser accuracy checked. Well chuffed with this tool

This was worth waiting for.
I ordered 3 of these to finally get one that is not faulty. Beware the quality of manufacture varies. The first one had a siezed up chuck assembly. The second one had a lot of chuck wobble, and finally the third one was all OK.That said this is an exceptional piece of kit. There is nothing on the market that can compare to the features and performance quality of one of these drill presses. Amazon are excellent regarding returns. It is very compact and very powerful. Starts at 200 rpm and goes up to about 2450 rpm with a 2 speed mechanical gear box. Has laser alignment, illumination and a depth stop system that works to 0.1 mm adjustment. Very good and fast clamping system for work pieces and set up in all respects is fast. Noise level is very modest. Totally worth every penny.

Brilliant drill press
Brilliant drill press ,i now use it a lot more than my old one where you have to move the belts to change speed,i must say i did'nt like the chuck though which was my only gripe .

Superb quality drill press.
This is a superb all-round pillar drill from Bosch. Out of the box it is easy to set up. The ability to adjust the height of the drill and manual depth-stop is great. There is also a digital depth gauge which is easy to use and excellent for repeatable holes. The whole unit is well constructed and well thought-though. The only thing that some may not like is the wheel used to move the drill up/down. However, I have quickly got used to this and now rather like it.The machine is pretty quiet in use. The chuck allows a wide range of drill bits/forstner bits etc to be accommodated. The work clamp is excellent - quick and easy to use and very effective. It has a very wide range of speeds - all easily adjusted via the control knob. All in all, I am exceptionally pleased with this - highly recommended.

Replacement unit fine. Bosch support nonexistent. First unit, SerNo 424000656 - Chuck defective
The replacement unit seems fine.- I tested for the wobble that others have reported by drilling a 2mm hole then putting the bit I had used into the hole backwards. It was a tight fit, there was no sideways movement at all - so there had been no wobble during drilling.- I also tested for wobble by resting the edge of an out-of-use plastic ruler against the chuck during use and watching the far end of it. There was no visible vibration at all.Assembly was a doddle.- I bolted the baseplate to a square of kitchen worktop with a batten underneath that I can tighten in my workmate.- The box includes the 4mm allen key needed to tighten the column to the baseplate.Being new at this, I'm finding it awkward manipulating everything when I fit & remove drill bits.I need a third hand.To avoid losing drill bits, I've got an empty plastic coleslaw tub underneath the chuck to catch them.I suppose I'll get used to it all with a bit of practice. If anybody wants to use a smaller drill bit than the declared 1.5mm minimum then they can get theseKeyless Drill Chucks with 1/4 Inch Hex Shankswww.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B24J21CVI got them to turn my electric screwdrivers into very handy additional drills for pilot & clearance holes.I've tested one in my Bosch bench drill and drilled a 0.7mm hole with it [that being the smallest drill bit that I have not yet broken.]I do not expect to be bothered in practice by the 1.5mm minimum because I've now taken to using small drill bits that have wide shanks.Micro Drill Bit Set 0.1-1mm with 3mm shankswww.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BR3X5386Their 3mm shanks also fit in my hand drill. [Not available now but the product page has links to others that are.]Lictin Woodworking Hand Drill Setwww.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0746HWFZJSixteen days ago, when I identified the first bench drill as duff, I reported this to Bosch support. Beyond an email acknowledgement, "Confirmation of your Request Ticket", I have not heard a peep out of them since.- - - - - - - - - - - - -I first bought this three weeks earlier - as "New". The Unlock ring [part of the chuck assembly] could not be rotated to allow drill bits to be fitted. I returned it.- Its box had been opened by somebody else beforehand.- The first unit's box did not contain the leaflet offering an extended guarantee. I now know that I can set that up by going to My-Bosch-Tools, creating an account, entering the product & serial numbers & attaching my Amazon invoice as proof of sale.[Product number is 3603M07072 or similar. It's the number high up on the product label.][Serial number is the nine digit number on the white part of the label, which also contains the month-year of manufacture.]
